Travertine is a sedimentary limestone rock of chemical type, widely used in construction, especially in Rome, since the 1st millennium B.C. The industrial quality of the bench sediment largely depends on its compactness. In general, however, travertine is a sturdy and pliable stone, which may be used for both outdoor and indoor flooring and facing, and even in sculpture in some cases. The aesthetic quality has by now been firmly established by architects, due to refined industrial processing methods in the last fifty years, and the wide number of treatments available.
